What to Expect about Being in Counseling

If you have never been to counseling or therapy before, you might have some questions about what it will be like. Everyone's experience is a little different because you are a unique individual.

But there are some things that you can expect to encounter.

Sessions generally include a discussion of your early experiences to help you and your therapist to better understand the root causes of your current problems. It can be surprising how your choices and perspectives are shaped by family, school, and other times in your life that don't seem directly relevant on the surface.

In our work together, you'll have the advantage of a combination of elements from several styles of psychotherapy, as best fits your situation. We tailor our treatment according to your individual needs.

Much of your time in counseling will be spent identifying and working to change the thought and behavior patterns that are keeping you from feeling your best. By the time you’re done, you will not only have solved the problem that brought you in, but you will also have learned new skills so you can better cope with whatever challenges arise in the future.

You will experience a collaborative treatment process where your needs and goals take priority. There will be lots of dialogue, as we talk through how you see and feel events in your life. And you'll have a supportive, neutral environment that allows you to talk openly, and without fear of being judged.

Talking with a licensed and well trained mental health counselor is better than talking with a friend. Unlike telling your problems to a family member or co-worker, in counseling you can count on objective feedback that is never jealous, self-obsessed, or in competition with you.

In fact, your counselor's only agenda is to help you work through problems in the most effective way, so you can to become the happiest, healthiest and most productive person you've ever wanted to be.
